    The Locke Report. Edition Cinq.

Although the weather might suggest otherwise, it is actually mid-summer. Therefore the racing season is well past the halfway mark, but my best races are still to come now I have been selected for the European and World Race Championships in Estonia and Italy respectively. Riding for Great Britain was one of my future goals, so getting selected in my first full season is a very welcome surprise. The selection was mainly riding on the result of the National Elite Road Race (what an epic course!), so I had to knuckle down and make sure I was the best espoir (U23). I finished tenth and also the best young rider, so that along with some results gained in France secured a spot in the team. With the Europeans in a couple of weeks there is no time to prepare significantly, but I will be definitely be tailoring my program to peak for the Worlds (and the Rodney Pine Hill Climb!) at the end of the season. It will be with out doubt the biggest thing I have ever done, and although I am under no illusions as to its difficulties, I will try to conjure up the form of my life for it. Anyway my tenth in the Nationals bore 9 UCI points so I am apparently ranked about 1140th in the world now – watch out Bettini!! This also means I will be an Elite 2 rider next year which was a major goal as now I can only ride Elite races. It is currently Nocturne (night time races) Season over here, which means plenty of primes and late nights in Hill-Billy villages. These races are usually stitched up by the local mafia of cunning ex-pros but I have managed to get a look in on a couple of occasions. My weight in bottles of the finest local champagne is always worth 2 hours of hell, especially when you sell the lot and go home with a few hundred euros!! Tin pot trophies, cash and the smell of burgers and chips – what more could you ask for? Apart from racing I have been blowing cash in the sales and trying to find reasons to justify the extravagance!! I have also managed a couple of BBQ’s to keep me sane. It’s been all change in the house-mate department lately: the Russian who was living with me has not been here for 2 months now as there is some problem with his visa and he can’t enter the country. A replacement was quickly found: a crazy Dutch guy called ‘ward’, aka ‘Spacecake’!! This name was bestowed on him by Kieran Page because he is so laid back, and seems to think everything will sort itself out!! I intend to leave him to his own tree hugging insanity and wait until he cracks which he will inevitably will. This guy also has an incredible talent for breaking things – it’s not something you can train – you have to be born with it. In his first week he broke the shower, two glasses, ripped a heater of the wall, snapped a door handle, and melted through a plastic colander – quite impressive for 7 days work I think you will agree!! Like the Russian before him, his taste in music is also quite, er, unique. Yesterday I returned from training to what sounded like the Chipmunks singing in Mexican. Apparently it will grow on me. Something that has grown on me though is French TV, what with the Tour on line everyday – riveting stuff. Right that’s about it for now. Next time I write I will have been to Estonia sweated into a Great Britain Jersey, and no doubt explained away some other broken item to the Club President. Enjoy the sun when it comes out, and get some DMT shoes from Colin Lewis Cycles because they’re great and everybody needs a pair or five. Jon.
