Edition Trois.I have only been in Troyes for one month and already it has left a real impression on me – Literally!! I have managed to crash twice in my first 3 races, so I guess you could say I was ridding consistently!! Neither crash was my fault I should add. Just the wrong place at the wrong time!! Last week, as well as road rash I managed to pick up a nasty cold which meant the best part of a week of my bike. My morale however is pretty good despite my recent streak of bad luck!! I am just looking forward to the races ahead rather than dwelling on my DNFs. My first race here went OK though. It was a big event with all the top Division 1 Teams present and Division 3 Pro Teams like Credit Agricole Espoirs as well. The standard was very high and it looked just like a pro race with big crowds, banners, a PA, and everything else that goes with it. A bit daunting for my first race in 5 months!! The field was big too with about 150 riders, Most of whom were Elite 2 or Div.3 Elite1 (pro). I didn’t ride as well as I could have done basically because of lack of experience and racing miles, but I won the sprint from the second group on the road to take 9th. For my first race I was satisfied with a top ten. At the moment I only have 1 race a week, but within 2 months I will be doing at least 3 and stage races too. My Director was impressed with my climbing and sprinting and so has decided to but me in for all the good stage races. These are also for Division 3 Pro Teams like ‘Oktos’ (Jeremy Hunt’s team last year), so they should be incredibly hard for me at 19!! Apart from cycling I haven’t been doing a great deal, but have gotten to know Kieran Page who lives round the corner, so we have been going out a bit. I reckon I will start training with him soon because it is so frustrating going out with my team. The reason being we are always urged to stay in little gears, spin, and take it easy all the time. Every ride is like a recovery ride and if you go hard or attack, they just let you go. Not like Mid Devon Club runs then!! I don’t know how you can race hard if you always train slowly. Not sure what my Director will thing of me training with Kieran though. There is intense rivalry between my club, UV. Aube, and Kieran’s, UVCA Troyes. At Paris-Troyes he got a bit funny when Kieran came over to our van to chat with me!! I couple of times a week I go shopping with my Russian Team-mate. He is keen to visit a different Supermarket every time if possible, so by the time the season is over I will be qualified to write a shoppers guide I reckon!! Once shopping has commenced, absolutely everything is scrutinized for possible defects and the prices checked, and double checked!! He will hold orange juice up to the light and make disapproving noises before picking another bottle and confirming it is OK, but perhaps that is necessary in Russia. Living with him is an education!! He also has some weird ideas about remedies for colds. The other day when I was ill he offered to make me a drink that would do me the world of good. I accepted gratefully but when I saw it consisted of melted butter, salt, olive oil, and milk I had to pretend it was just too hot top drink. Luckily I had the opportunity to sling it – undetected – and when asked I said it had helped immensely. I politely declined the offer for some more, but I guess it’s the thought that counts!! That’s just about it for now. More in a couple of weeks when my luck will hopefully have changed!! Jon.
